Chymbidium Orchid Wedding Cake

Ok, I have to admit.  I have absolutely no idea what kind of orchid this is.  I certainly don't know how to pronounce it, though I can give it a try.

However, I can't go to sleep without posting at least one picture of a cake and Pink Cake Box is one of my favorite places to find the best ones.

And it's not all about the looks.  According to the cake masters themselves, this one was made with:

Flavors included chocolate with hazelnut buttercream, “wine” velvet with vanilla buttercream, and graham cracker cake with s’mores.

Yum!  Time to go dream of flowers and chocolate.

All the best,

Sharyn

Bees in an autumn cake?

Everyone says it's the little details that count.  Check out this beautiful fall themed wedding cake via the blog at Wedding Paper Divas.  It's absolutely elegant and perfectly fits the theme.  But there's one tiny detail that I don't understand.  Bees in the autumn?  Not where I live.  Still, it's very cute and the colors and flowers are a feast for the eyes.

Caribbean Tropical Wedding - be your own cake designer

I fall more in love with these photos via Project Wedding every time I look at them. The theme was a Caribbean inspired wedding and the colors give the feeling that you are basking in the tropical sun and swimming in the clear blue water.  I wish.  The unique part of this wedding is that the guests had their own little mini cakes to decorate.  There was an array of brightly colored icings, mini paint brushes and nothing else in the way of your own creativity.

Many readers said that this would be perfect for a bridal shower.  I agree, but why can't wedding guests have fun too?  Is this kind of activity only for girls?  I bet there are a few guys who would dig right in also, so long as they could devour their concoctions afterwards.  I do agree that this would work best at a smaller wedding though.

The big question is - where is the chocolate icing?  I'm not really that interested in icing unless it's chocolate.

Purple Flowers for a dramatic touch

I love purple almost as much as pink.  In this photo, one of the readers at Wedding Bee showed a picture of some purple flowers she used to decorate her wedding cake.  I love the effect of the bold purple against the elegant, simple white fondant design on the cake.  Very modern, but with a soft, Spring feel also.  I'll bet you could find some beautiful white invitations with purple flowers to match a theme like this.

What's your favorite flower color?

More chocolate wedding cakes

Since the image in my last post didn't show up I thought I'd show you a few more ideas for chocolate wedding cakes.  These are going to have me running to the store to buy some good dark chocolate if I don't get away from my computer pronto.  Thank you to Wedding Wire for these beautiful, scrumptious photos.

Who said you can't have chocolate wedding cake?

Whenever I watch one of the wedding cake shows (a secret passion), I wonder why the brides think that they have to do a white cake rather than chocolate.  Sometimes they think it's to avoid guests' allergies.  Other times, it's the cake chef saying that it's more difficult to hide the darkness of the cake when you want white icing.  I say, if you don't like chocolate then there is something seriously wrong with you and it's the cake chef's problem to make it work.  Here's one way to get around any issues.  Just make it chocolate inside and out and make the flowers white.  I love the idea of having double the amount of chocolate.  Still, buttercream would have been better than fondant and far more decadent.

sneak peak at Top Chef wedding cakes

A lot more pressure than Amazing Wedding Cakes, the Top Chef Desserts wedding cakes competition looks like total chaos with buttercream on top. I can't imagine how anyone can create a cake under this kind of time limit.  Glad it's not my cake that they're making!

Just make sure you give your own wedding cake chef a little extra time to be on the safe side.

Vintage Wedding with a touch of Jane Austen

This beautiful photo shoot comes to us via The Sweetest Occasion and Style Me Pretty.  The theme is based on Pride and Prejudice, one of my all-time favorite books by Jane Austen (I even loved the movie version), and everything about it is reminiscent of that era.  Check out the delicate flower arrangements, estate backdrop, vintage furniture, antique-looking teacuts, butterfly-themed cake, and even the fabric draped on the cake table.  Make me all dreamy-eyed and ready to go read the book again!

Wildly Imaginative Wedding Cakes

How would you like to be your own wedding cake topped?  What happens to you once everyone's eaten your dress?  Do you have to come up through a trap door to get in?  This cake inspired a lot of questions and debate in my house.  But read the rest of the article from Mental Floss for 30 truly weird, or just plain geeky, wedding cakes. Sushi anyone?

Bridesmaid Dresses that make enemies for life

What's the worst bridesmaid dress you ever saw?  There were some truly horrific ones in the movie "27 Dresses", but here's one that would make me seriously reconsider my friendship with the bride.

Williams-Sonoma is definitely “the one” in terms of couples’ favorite wedding registry destinations, and now they are turning the tables on us. They want to hear about the moment you knew that your partner was the one for you!

Personally, my favorite “moment I knew” stories tend to be the quirky or silly ones, as my husband and I have a hard time taking anything too seriously. In fact, I knew he was the one the first time we had a few drinks together and he got super goofy and lovey-dovey. It was about four months after we’d started dating, and we were hanging out with a group of friends, just having a good time. I still have a photo of him from that night, standing on a chair and doing his weird version of the Robot!

We all have our own stories and own journeys to love, and Williams-Sonoma wants to know yours.

Giveaway rules:

Beginning at 12:00 pm PST Monday September 20, create a registry at Williams-Sonoma. If you’ve already registered with W-S, simply add another item to your registry. Once you’ve created your registry or added a new item, leave a comment on this post with your “moment I knew he/she was the one” story. You’ll receive an extra entry if you include a link to your public registry in your comment. One lucky reader will be selected using our random generator.

You have until September 26 at 12:00 pm PST to enter—so good luck!

Greenhouse weddings and visions of Springtime

It's getting late, but I just came across these beautiful photos via OnceWed.  It was a gorgeous day today and they make me feel like spring is just around the corner (rather than winter).  For those of you planning a Spring wedding, I hope these give you some ideas.

Out West and Down Under Engagement Shoot

This comes to us via Polka Dot Bride, an Australian wedding blog.  The photos are of an engagement shoot in Australia that has the feel of an old Western silent movie, complete with the femme fatale, sexy unshaven look, and the little feminine pistol for wandering grooms.  Amazing black and white photography.

Wedding guest fashion

We’ve seen some great guest fashion in recent weddings and thought we’d end the week with a fun post on what peeps OTHER than the bride and groom are wearing to weddings. Stylish guests make for such great photos, don’t they?

A Different Take on DIY (and DIT)

This pretty much reflects my own attitude towards DIY. If you're good at it and enjoy that sort of thing - go for it. I'm not great at it myself, but I've done the best I could where it also made sense financially. Just don't do it because all the artsy wedding blogs tell you to.

- Sharyn

via A Practical Wedding by meg on 9/7/10

Two different complaints about the DIY culture of weddings came up in the comments last week. I thought they were interesting, and I thought it was high time (again) to talk about the cult of wedding DIY.

The first complaint was, in sum, “F*cking brides, man. Why are they always asking you to DO SH*T TO HELP THEM. It’s such an imposition and so uncool. You shouldn’t expect your guests to care about your wedding as much as you do.” The second was, in sum, “F*cking DIY, man. Why is there so much pressure on APW and other indie websites to DIY everything for your wedding? I hate crafting. This is so uncool.” Both of these comments made me pause, because they highlighted the dissonance between the way I view DIY and the way wedding culture views DIY.

I grew up in a semi-hippie, very community focused micro-culture populated by a lot of artists without a lot of money. The macro-culture I grew up in was a very conservative largely poor suburb/city (cityburb?), populated by a lot of friends without any money. Both of these sometimes diametrically opposed cultures viewed big life event the same way – every one pitches in to get it done. That was just the end of it. When you don’t have a lot of money, ‘making it work’ becomes your cultural default. You just don’t waste a lot of time thinking that ‘it can’t be done,’ because obviously, objectively, you can’t do whatever-it-is without money. But you don’t have money, and you are going to do it, so you just have to figure it out.

Because of the way I grew up, I’ve been able to sew since I could reach a sewing machine. In High School I would throw beautiful backyard parties with old sheets, a string of lights, and flowers I managed to pick from hedgerows, and cake and tea I made in big quantities. I knew people who lived more or less on the road in these amazing plywood shelters that they made to look like magical gypsy caravans. My friends throw these crazy anti-homecoming parties (when people couldn’t afford homecoming tickets) at bowling alleys. And, when it comes to weddings, I’ve gone to my share of potluck weddings, dish in hand. I’ve helped set up or tear down weddings and parties. Hell, I even went to one wedding where the bride paid for it by stripping for a year (Yeah. True story…. And one of the most fun weddings I’ve ever been to, actually.)So make it work? Got it in my genes. But crafty? Not me. The first time I picked up a Martha Stewart Weddings (years ago, I actually really like MSW), and came across one of their monthly craft projects (make a basket for your flower girl!) I was really confused. I kept looking at it thinking, “Weddings are pretty stressful. Why would you want to add making a basket for your flower girl to everything else you have to do? You could buy this for a dollar.” Ha. Clearly I had not yet entered the world of wedding DIY.

So what happened when we threw our wedding? Well. We made some stuff. But I wouldn’t say we crafted anything. Not because crafting is bad, just because we’re not so good at it. When I fell under the thrall of indie wedding blogs, I totally had plans to craft some things (photo booths, screen printed tote bags, photobooth backdrops). But in the end, my laziness, which I like to call pragmatism, won out, and we scrapped all those projects.

So what did we make? We made A) Things that we couldn’t afford to buy (our flower arrangements, for example) and B) Things that had dreamt up, that we couldn’t buy (our huppah, our invitations). And it was rad. It was hard work, but in the end it was this joyful, kinda-grassroots feeling wedding.

So did we craft to be indie cool? Heck no. Do I think you should craft to be indie-cool? Heck no. I think you should craft if you’re a crafter, and that’s your thing. I think you should make stuff if that’s part of what you need to do to afford your wedding (and that’s part of your ethos), and I think everyone else should simplify like crazy, and throw DIY out the window.

But what about Do-It-Together? Well, know your audience. If you are blessed with a community that pitches in to make magic happen, don’t dream of trying to stop (or control) them. You will loose, and that will be the best thing that ever happened to you. If you have a community that hates pitching in to help out, don’t try to make them (it will suck for you… trust me, I had my moments with that). So instead simplify, simplify, simplify, hire help when you can, and know that everyone else will get the h*ll over all the stuff you left out.

And wedding guests? Friends and family? If a bride asks you to help her out, HELP HER. It’s a mitzvah, first of all. And second of all, even thought we’ve spent the last few decades in a world of professional weddings, as times get harder, we’re all being called to community. And sometimes what sounds like a ginormous pain in the ass turns out to be a pile of fun:

Yeah. That’s our friend who took Polaroids for us at our wedding. I think she’s having a pretty ok time.

Sheer Awesomeness: xkcd-Themed Wedding Cake!

This cake is making the rounds because it's so cute. I have no idea who the xkcd.com comic is, but I'm going to check it out now! - Sharyn Funny Wedding Cake Toppers Just Weddings

Sheer Awesomeness: xkcd-Themed Wedding Cake!

This cake has been going around the Interwebs this week because it’s awesome. It must be celebrated as much as possible. Aside from just being cool because it’s xkcd-themed, I love the algorithm metaphor “you can’t qualify love.” Perfect for a wedding cake! In the words of the baker:

“The top of the cake includes cutouts of the comic characters with a red heart on a wire between them. The entire cake is covered in white fondant with black thin bands at the base of each tier. Equations inspired by this comic decorate the remaining tiers. We also included some unusual flavors including banana cake with coffee & chocolate mousse and vanilla with raspberry & strawberry mousse.”

YUM!!
